APPROACHING LANDSCAPE DESIGN
FROM A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE

Unique landscapes begin with definitive design, a deep analysis of the site and expert site administration. With this core philosophy, Grey Leaf Design creates a dynamic platform of coordinated relationships between built and natural elements and their effect on the human spirit. At Grey Leaf Design both the science and the art of design are taken into account, creating designs that awaken the senses while resonating with the soul. With this in mind Grey Leaf Design focuses on providing sustainable solutions for your project. We believe a landscape design should be a work of art and an embodiment of your dreams. It should engage the senses and delight the imagination. A landscape design should have memorable focal points and a lasting unique beauty enhancing personal enjoyment. Because the landscape embraces the structure it should complement both site and structure.

SITE DESIGN
The site design may also be referred to as a “master” plan. This includes all elements that we have discussed with our clients for their projects. The exact information in these are subject to change per project as each project has their own unique set of design needs. A typical site design includes a full-color plan that has plant data labeled, hardscape areas drawn per material and any custom pieces represented. We include all pertinent information for our clients to be able to view and understand the overall design.
Site Grading Plans
GRADING PLANS
We offer grading design services incorporated into our stormwater management services. Whether you are planning a new home construction or redesigning a portion of your lot, we are able to digitally map and design appropriate, safe drainage that is in accordance with local agency requirements. We enjoy implementing innovative strategies for reshaping the land and using our creative minds to rework the land to increase overall site interest.

HARDSCAPE DESIGN
Hardscape design refers to non-plant areas of a site design. Some examples of these areas are driveways, parking lots, patios, walls and walkways. These hardscape areas are typically shared space areas that provide transportation routes and opportunities for entertaining. We gather information from our clients to understand basic site needs or wants, and design unique spaces that are functional and enjoyable to use. The materials used in each space can vary drastically depending on budget and use. We are continually educating ourselves on new products and creating truly custom pieces for our clients.

PLANTING DESIGN
To say planting design is an integral part to overall landscape design would be an understatement. There is a wide range of design styles, as well as many classic styles, of designing with plants in the landscape. As we look at the overall style of the structures in the landscapes we are working with and the goals of our clients, we customize the planting style to fit perfectly with these elements. To have one set style would not be to design at all. It is our pleasure to consider color, texture, size, smell, light requirements, soil conditions, water usage and more when choosing the palette of plants to integrate into a landscape. The four seasons we experience here in Minnesota lend our plants to change dramatically in physical appearance. We use these qualities to shine a light on year-round interest.
Site Irrigation
IRRIGATION DESIGN
Irrigation design can be easily passed over as something that seems basic. We disagree. With today’s technology we are able to use our design software to create an efficient irrigation plan that can calculate the exact amount of water reaching each plant zone. This software also allows us to design custom watering zones based on site design and specify the exact irrigation heads and control panel to be installed to minimize any potential water waste.
Lighting Site Plan
LIGHTING DESIGN
Lighting is an excellent feature to make your space come to life at night. Whether it be uplighting specific trees, sculpture or path lighting, it is definitely an element that will take your design to the next level. We encourage you to consider incorporating the lighting design in your site plan even if you are not planning to install it right away. We have the ability to place sleeves under hardscape and prepare areas for landscape lighting in the future.
Documentaion Plans
CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENTATION
It is important to have the knowledge of how various site elements will be constructed and specify the method that is to be used. Through many years of experience and continuing education courses, we have discovered construction methods that are superior over others. Full construction documentation is provided for contractors to have the ability to install a site design strictly from looking at the plans. This will ensure that once we hand over a set of plans to a contractor for construction, they have the information they need to install it correctly. Our clients can be assured that the time and energy we have spent on creating the best design will come to life how it is planned.
Naturalistic Render
3D VIRTUAL RENDERINGS
Taking a design from two dimensions to three is a transformation that will allow for complete understanding of how a landscape will actually be when you are able to physically walk through it. We understand that there are many ways people visualize, and sometimes it is helpful to have another way to communicate an idea. Let us take you on a virtual walk into the third dimension. Whether it is an entire landscape or just a custom feature like a fountain, we are able to develop drawings specific to your needs. Three-dimensional drawings are a great tool to use for promoting a design, specifically if you are looking at raising funds, grant applications, or simply trying to gain majority approval. We can help you with those goals.

SITE + CONSTRUCTION ADMINISTRATION

Our clients can be assured that the time and energy we have spent on creating the best design will come to life how it is planned. The administration of your site is simply a way for us to verify the work that is being installed is following the plans we created. We have developed specific timing for site check-in’s and are available for the contractors should emergencies or unexpected issues arise.

SITE AMENITY PROCUREMENT
Have you ever been in a home for sale and thought, “Wow, I can see myself living here!" or "Wow, this house is so stark/uninviting.”? It is likely the first thought was a home that was properly staged for buyers to really see what the potential is in that home. This is a great parallel to a landscape that has site amenities. If amenities are left for an afterthought, they are often forgotten and overlooked as less important, but this will really give your space that final “finished” look. We are happy to assist you in selecting furniture, pots, sculpture and other landscape amenities while the design process is occurring. There is great success and enjoyment in finding pieces of furniture that fit perfectly to a space. When we know exactly what amenities we have for a site, we can make sure, through proper design, that those elements are placed within the new landscape just right.
